About the Programme:
The course will give knowledge about Intellectual Property Rights and Access to Medicine.
The granting of exclusive rights to inventors and developers of new drugs can provide a financial incentive to invest in research and development, leading to the discovery of new and effective medicines.
Access to essential medicines can be improved through measures such as compulsory licensing and parallel imports, which allow generic versions of drugs to be produced and sold at a lower cost.
Initiatives aimed at increasing access to medicines in developing countries, such as the World Health Organization’s Essential Medicines List and the Medicines Patent Pool, can help to ensure that people in these countries have access to affordable and effective medicines.
Overall, the outcomes of IPRs and Access to Medicine are complex and depend on a variety of factors, including the specific policies and initiatives in place, as well as the political and economic context in which they are implemented.
Objectives of the program:
- To encourage innovation and research in the pharmaceutical industry by granting exclusive rights to inventors and developers of new drugs.
- To ensure that people have access to affordable and effective medicines, particularly in developing countries where the cost of healthcare can be prohibitively high.
- To ensure that these exclusive rights do not hinder access to essential medicines, such as compulsory licensing or parallel imports, which allow generic versions of drugs to be produced and sold at a lower cost.
- Aimed at increasing access to medicines in developing countries, such as the WHO Essential Medicines List, which identifies the most important medicines needed in a health system and promotes their availability at affordable prices.
- To balance the needs of both innovation and public health, ensuring that new medicines are developed while also making them accessible to those who need them most.
