Awareness Program on Intellectual Property Rights in Drug Discovery and Development

Events

On January 22, 2019

About the Programme:

The course will give knowledge about Intellectual Property Rights in Drug Discovery and Development.

IPR provides a financial incentive for pharmaceutical companies and researchers to invest time and resources into developing new drugs, leading to the discovery of new medicines and treatments for diseases.IPR provides a temporary monopoly for the owner of the intellectual property, which allows them to recoup their research and development costs and generate profits to fund future research.

IPR encourages the sharing of knowledge and technology between public and private sectors, leading to collaborations and partnerships that can advance drug development and improve public health. IPR plays a critical role in regulating the quality and safety of drugs by establishing standards for testing, manufacturing, and distribution.

While IPR can create barriers to access to medicines, it can also facilitate access by incentivizing the development of drugs for neglected diseases and enabling technology transfer to developing countries.

Objectives of the program:

  • To promote innovation, stimulate investment, and ensure that the fruits of research and development are protected and rewarded.
  • To provide exclusive rights to inventors, creators, or owners of intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, and copyrights, to prevent others from using, making, or selling their inventions or creations without permission.
  • To incentivize pharmaceutical companies and researchers to invest time and resources into developing new drugs by providing them with a temporary monopoly on their discoveries.
  • To encourages technology transfer and knowledge sharing, as well as collaborative research and development between public and private sectors.
