3-Day Seminar & Training Program on Medical Coding & Billing Conducted Successfully at Anurag Pharmacy College

To equip pharmacy students with industry-relevant knowledge and bridge the gap between academic learning and professional healthcare practices, the Department of Pharmacy at Anurag Pharmacy College successfully organized a 3-Day Seminar & Training Program on Medical Coding & Billing from 22nd June 2026 to 24th June 2026 at the Pharmacy Block Seminar Hall.

The intensive training program was designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of medical coding and billing, an increasingly important domain in modern healthcare systems. Through expert-led sessions, practical demonstrations, and interactive assignments, participants gained valuable insights into coding standards, insurance documentation, pharmacy billing procedures, and healthcare reimbursement systems.

Expert Resource Person

The training sessions were conducted by Dr. M. Siddhartha, Team Leader & Manager, MEDESUN, Hyderabad, an experienced professional in the field of medical coding and healthcare documentation. With extensive industry expertise, Dr. Siddhartha provided students with both theoretical knowledge and practical exposure, helping them understand how medical coding supports patient care, insurance claims, and healthcare administration.

Program Objectives

The seminar was organized with the following key objectives:

  • To introduce students to the role and significance of medical coding in the healthcare industry.
  • To familiarize participants with globally accepted coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS.
  • To explain the relationship between medical coding, pharmacy practice, insurance claims, and billing processes.
  • To provide hands-on training through real-life pharmacy scenarios and coding exercises.
  • To prepare pharmacy students with industry-ready skills that enhance their career opportunities in healthcare services.

Day 1 – Introduction to Medical Coding

The inaugural session focused on building a strong foundation in medical coding and billing. Students were introduced to the process of converting medical diagnoses, procedures, and healthcare services into standardized alphanumeric codes.

The session covered:

  • Fundamentals of Medical Coding
  • Importance of accurate coding in healthcare documentation
  • Medical billing and insurance claim processing
  • Patient record management
  • Overview of major coding systems:
    • ICD-10 Codes
    • CPT Codes
    • HCPCS Codes

To reinforce classroom learning, students were assigned to watch educational videos demonstrating the practical workflow of medical coding.

Day 2 – Understanding ICD-10, CPT & HCPCS Coding Systems

The second day focused on an in-depth exploration of the three major coding systems used worldwide.

Students learned about:

  • Structure and classification of ICD-10 codes
  • Coding of common diseases such as:
    • Type 2 Diabetes
    • Hypertension
  • Application of ICD-10 codes in Medication Therapy Management (MTM)
  • Understanding CPT codes used for medical procedures
  • Introduction to HCPCS Level I and Level II coding systems
  • Coding for healthcare services, medical supplies, and equipment

An interactive assignment challenged students to identify the appropriate ICD-10 codes for commonly encountered diseases, encouraging active participation and improving coding accuracy.

Day 3 – Practical Applications in Pharmacy Practice

The final day focused on applying theoretical concepts to practical pharmacy scenarios.

Students participated in a detailed case study involving diabetes management, where they learned how medical coding supports pharmacy operations and healthcare reimbursement.

The practical exercise required students to:

  • Assign the correct ICD-10 diagnosis code.
  • Identify appropriate CPT procedure codes.
  • Select relevant HCPCS codes for medical supplies and healthcare services.
  • Understand the workflow involved in pharmacy billing and reimbursement.

The hands-on approach enabled participants to gain confidence in applying coding concepts to real-world pharmacy practice.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the three-day training program, students were able to:

  • Understand the importance of medical coding within healthcare systems.
  • Identify and interpret ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Apply coding principles in pharmacy-related clinical scenarios.
  • Understand insurance claim processing and reimbursement procedures.
  • Recognize the role of accurate documentation in improving healthcare quality and operational efficiency.

Student Participation and Feedback

The seminar witnessed enthusiastic participation from pharmacy students, who actively engaged in discussions, assignments, and practical exercises throughout all six sessions.

The interactive teaching methodology, real-world examples, and hands-on coding activities made the learning experience highly engaging and beneficial. Students expressed positive feedback, appreciating the opportunity to gain industry-oriented knowledge that extends beyond traditional classroom education.

Conclusion

The 3-Day Seminar & Training Program on Medical Coding & Billing proved to be an enriching educational initiative that successfully bridged the gap between academic learning and professional healthcare practices. The program provided students with a comprehensive understanding of medical coding, billing procedures, healthcare documentation, and insurance processes, all of which are increasingly valuable skills in today's healthcare environment.
